Editorial Note to people just now discovering the Town of Wells:
This website is as much a tribute to the folks that live here and the neighborly ambiance they create as it is an informational source for them. As such, now the Town of Wells claims its seat on the world wide web sharing information with you, plain and simple, without Flash in case you have dial up service. What you will find in Wells is a peaceful town in a pristine setting unique to
Vermont in all of its glory. Even though steeped in years of tradition, its
multi-generational residents serve this community side-by-side with newcomers;
some very public while others simply work their magic quietly in the
background.
Amongst all the personalities within this town---you will find humor and caring
and thoughtfulness---as colorful and as individual as the seasons and as
interesting as this town's rich history. Enjoy!

THE LITTLE TOWN THAT DARED TO DREAM BIG
Wells, Vermont, is a quaint, picturesque town nestled among mountains located
southwest of Rutland at the southern tip of Lake St. Catherine, a mile from
Granville, New York. Chartered in 1761, this town of 23 square miles houses a
population of 1,121, with a density of 48.3 people per square mile. Summertime
residents and visitors at least quadruple the population.
Wells may be a very small and quaint New England community, but for it’s size, its achievements are extraordinary. For over two centuries, residents
conducted town business in rented or donated spaces, often ill equipped to
support the affairs of this community.

Proud of their little town and deeming it necessary, the town leaders set out in
determined pursuit of designing and building a Town Hall. They discussed what
was needed to achieve their dream.
It wasn’t long before Don Preuss volunteered to manage the construction project as Clerk
of the Works while others volunteered to serve on the building committee
including Chairman Norman Brown, Secretary Stephanie Andrew Smith, Joe Capron,
Ron Dreher, Rich Holcomb, Dave Murray, and Paul Woodruff.
Working hard, the building committee raised necessary funds and contributions to
cover costs and create their new Town Hall.
This completed project came in on-budget and months ahead of schedule, due to
the dedication and teamwork among the volunteers, the general contractor and
donors. Topped with a slate roof and its floors dressed in slate as well, this
building of fine quality workmanship and materials is projected to last for
over two hundred years.
Generous contributions toward this project, including land donated by the Preuss
family, $100,000 and the slate roof from Jack Williams, and many other
thoughtful gifts narrowed the Town’s debt down to $171,000 from the actual cost, valued at over $600,000.
