Daring to Dream Big AgainĀ PROTECTING THE DELANEY FARM!
WOW! Since this information was posted, great success has been achieved. More to come soon. See the March 3rd update below, right
Like the “Little Engine That Could,” residents of Wells, Vermont, are proving their might once again; this time they are doing it in partnership with the Vermont Land Trust (VLT), a non-profit organization with a mission to conserve community lands.
This new adventure began when the parcel of land [roughly outlined in yellow in
the banner photograph above] came on the market for $700,000 shortly after the
owner of the property, Joan Delaney, died in 2009. As you can see, the 300 +
acres is a very precious parcel of land. The instant the For Sale sign was planted in the ground in front of Ms. Delaney’s former home, residents and public officials set out in haste, determined to
prevent the land from being sold on the open market, sub divided and developed.
While rumors flew, officials of VLT and the town of Wells rolled up their
sleeves and got right down to the business at hand. Under the creative
coordination and some clever maneuvering between Donald Campbell, Regional
Director of VLT, and Rich Strange, a Town Selectman, a proposal emerged and was
simultaneously presented to the Officials of VLT and to the Wells Board of
Selectmen: Don Preuss, Rich Strange, and Bob Davis for consideration. Both VLT
and the Wells Selectmen gave unanimous approval to the proposal and the wheels
began to turn.
Faster than a soaring rocket, VLT purchased the land and residents of Wells
began organizing their fundraising efforts to purchase water frontage and
additional acreage for Town usage for $150,000.
This story of “Daring to Dream Big Again ~ Protecting the Delaney Farm” has just begun to unfold. From its inception and in good faith, residents are
rallying to support the initiative under the leadership of Rich Strange and
Donald Campbell.
There’s a whole lot more to come. You can watch the progress or be part of it; visit the VLT site for the latest information; donate online; download the Delaney
brochure; or learn more first-hand and meet the folks spearheading this
initiative by attending any one of the up-and-coming Get Acquainted Festivities. Listen to Rich Strange and Donald Campbell’s interview on Vermont Public Radio, and above all else, Stay Tuned!
